Yuengling is the largest American owned brewery.  It is also the largest brewery by volumes.  It was founded in 1829 by David G. Yuengling a German immigrant, as the Eagle Brewery.   The first beers crafted were Lord Chesterfield Ale and Porter Beer.   Unfortunately in 1831 there was a fire that almost destroyed the brewery, so a new one was built on Mahantongo Street in Pottsville, PA where it remains today.  In 1873 the brewery’s name is changed to D. G. Yuengling & Son after David’s son, Frederick joined his father's business.  David dies in 1877 at the age 70 and his son, Frederick continues running the business until his death in 1899.  His only son, Frank D. Yuengling, takes over the business.  The brewery stays open during prohibition by making a cereal drink they called "near beer", branded as an energy drink called "Juvo" and also running a dairy business.  After running the business for 64 years, Frank D. dies at the age of 86.  His two sons take over the business and in 1976 the brewery is placed in the National and State registers as America’s Oldest Brewery.  This year, 2019, the brewery will celebrate it's 190th Anniversary.  Interesting fact about the name Yuengling, it is an Anglicized version of Jüngling, its founder's surname and the German term for "youngling" or "young person”.
