Genicanthus melanospilos -Black spot swallowtail angelfish - The Genicanthus family of angelfish are among the only fully reef safe angelfish options for your reef tank. They are sexually dimorphic meaning the males and females have differing characteristics. Females are adorned with a gorgeous cream and yellow coloration while males have a striking set of black barring along their entire body. All Genicanthus Angelfish are born female. After a group of angelfish have been together for years and reach maturity, one will slowly transition into a male.
This is a haremic angelfish species, meaning they naturally live in groups consisting of one male and multiple females. The most reliable way to form a pair or trio in captivity is to start with juveniles or females, allowing the group to establish naturally. Over time, the dominant fish becomes male and the remaining individuals stay female. Introducing fish at the same time and providing ample swimming space and visual breaks all help reduce initial aggression. With proper space and a calm environment, pairs and trios can be stable and rewarding long term.
